A proactive approach to living well:
Men often delay seeking medical advice, putting their health last while focusing on work, family, and responsibilities. Yet many of the most serious health conditions affecting men develop quietly over years before symptoms appear.
A proactive, preventive approach to health can dramatically improve quality of life, longevity, and day-to-day wellbeing. Regular check-ups, early detection, and honest conversations about physical and emotional health are key to staying well at every stage of life.
This page outlines the key areas of men’s health that deserve attention and how working together with your GP can help you stay at your best.
Heart Health
Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of illness and death in men. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, excess weight, poor sleep, and stress all contribute to cardiovascular risk, often without obvious warning signs.
Regular screening allows early identification of risk factors and practical steps to reduce them. Through blood tests, blood pressure monitoring, lifestyle advice, and where appropriate, medication, we can significantly lower the risk of heart attack and stroke and protect long-term heart health.
At Paddington Medical Centre, we provide both preventative and acute and long term cardiac health for men. Our team is dedicated to helping you achieve your health goals, and our approach is tailored to your individual needs.
We provide comprehensive assessments and treatments, from general check-ups to detailed cardiac examinations and Healthy Heart appointments.
All the doctors are experienced in quality cardia. We have ECG facilities and excellent working relationships with cardiac specialists.
Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing
Mental health concerns are common in men at every stage of life, yet many men find it difficult to speak openly about how they’re feeling. Stress, anxiety, low mood, sleep disturbance, irritability, burnout, and emotional strain — whether triggered by work pressures, relationship challenges, grief, chronic health conditions, or major life changes — can significantly impact quality of life and physical wellbeing.
At our practice, we recognise that mental and emotional health is as important as physical health. A number of our GPs have a special interest in mental health and are experienced in supporting men through a wide range of emotional health concerns. These clinicians combine compassion with clinical expertise to provide care that is respectful, evidence-based, and tailored to your needs.
Whether you’re dealing with ongoing stress, changes in mood, sleep problems, anxiety, or simply finding it harder to cope than you used to, there is support available in a confidential, non-judgmental setting. Early conversations can make a meaningful difference — whether that leads to lifestyle strategies, counselling, medication, or a coordinated plan that suits you.
Sexual Health
Erectile dysfunction.
Erectile dysfunction is a very common condition characterised by an inability to acquire or maintain an erection during sexual activity. Around 40% of men aged over 40 have some degree of erectile dysfunction, rising to over 70% at 70 years of age. Erectile dysfunction can also be an early indicator of other serious health conditions, so it is important to discuss any issue you have with your doctor. As well as a health check, your doctor will also discuss the numerous treatments available to you.
Ejaculation Problems
Premature ejaculation is one of the most common sexual health problems and affects men of all ages.
This may lead to lack of confidence in sexual relationships, causing anxiety and in some cases depression.
Our doctors can discuss the options available to you.
Libido Disorders
Low libido in men can be caused by a number of issues. Many medications can cause a loss of libido, as can a number of hormonal problems and chronic alcohol consumption.
Our doctors will take the time to investigate any issues you may have, and discuss the treatment options available to you.
Testicular Cancer
Testicular cancer is often found in younger men and a large majority of testicular cancers are found in the early stages. A lump on one testicle or unexplained swelling should always be promptly investigated.
Prostate Cancer Testing
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia, usually affecting older men. All men over 40 are offered a baseline PSA test.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise in Australia, and our doctors can discreetly test for sexually transmitted diseases (Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, HIV, Herpes Simplex, and Syphilis). You do not need to have symptoms to test. Remember it's always better to test if you're unsure. If diagnosed, our doctors will explain the required treatment plan, and assess the need for any further investigations.
